IUML Breaks 6-Decade Alliance with DMK, Joins TVK Government!

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has officially ended its nearly six-decade-long alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), marking a significant political development in Tamil Nadu. The decision, announced on Saturday (June 20, 2026), comes after recent Assembly elections saw a shift in the state's leadership.
Following the election results, the IUML has now extended its support to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and has even joined its ministry. Kader Mohideen, the national president of the IUML, explained the resolution adopted at the party’s general council meeting. He stated their initial hope for the Dravidian Model government to return to power under M.K. Stalin, but acknowledged that “God’s will appears to have been otherwise,” as the “whistle” symbol of the TVK resonated across the State, leading to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s party winning 108 seats.
Despite the TVK falling short of a clear majority, several parties, including the IUML, chose to extend their support. Mohideen highlighted the strong desire within the Muslim community to back the TVK. He emphasized that their support was given without any preconditions, driven by the belief that not doing so could have resulted in Governor’s rule, which they viewed as indirectly amounting to BJP rule.
The decision to join the TVK Ministry received approval from the IUML's political advisory committee. Mohideen noted the public perception of the TVK-led government providing good governance and expressed the party's desire for this to continue, thus solidifying their place within the new alliance.
Looking ahead, the IUML has committed to cooperating with the TVK in forthcoming elections. Having become part of the Ministry, the party will support the TVK in Assembly byelections, Lok Sabha elections, and local body polls, signaling a new chapter in Tamil Nadu's dynamic political landscape.
