Peruvians are heading to the polls this Sunday for a pivotal election runoff, which sees right-wing stalwart Keiko Fujimori go head-to-head with leftist congressman Roberto Sánchez. This election is crucial as the country looks to elect its ninth president in just a decade, a period marked by persistent political instability, rising crime rates, widespread corruption scandals, and palpable voter apathy.
Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, is making her fourth bid for the presidency. She secured 17% of the vote in the first round back in April. Her political journey began early, becoming first lady at age 19 after her parents' divorce during her father's authoritarian rule in the 1990s.
Challenging her is Roberto Sánchez, a former trade and tourism minister, who surprised many by taking 12% of the initial vote. Sánchez, 57, served under the populist leftist president Pedro Castillo and has embraced Castillo's legacy, even adopting his signature sombrero. He has successfully garnered significant support from rural voters, many of whom still identify with Castillo and believe he was unjustly removed from office.
Pedro Castillo was ousted in December 2022 after attempting to dissolve congress and rule by decree, an act that led to his sentencing to 11 years and five months in jail for rebellion in November 2025.
Pollsters predict an incredibly close contest, mirroring the last three election runoffs in Peru. An Ipsos poll released on Thursday showed the candidates in a statistical dead heat, with Sánchez slightly ahead at 43.8% to Fujimori's 43.2%. The stage is set for a deeply polarized left-right political battle.
