Toxic Algae Forces 'No Swim' Warning at London's Only Thames Bathing Spot!
London's sole official Thames bathing spot, Ham Riverside, is now under a 'do not swim' warning due to a toxic blue-green algae outbreak. Environmental Agency advises caution! #ThamesAlgae
A popular new bathing spot in London, the first of its kind on the River Thames, has been hit with a stark "do not swim" warning. Swimmers and pet owners are now advised to stay out of the water at Ham Riverside, Richmond, following the discovery of a potentially toxic blue-green algae bloom.
The Environmental Agency issued the crucial warning after tests confirmed the presence of the harmful algae.
This means London's only official river bathing area, which was only designated last year, is currently unsafe for recreational use.
The blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins harmful to both humans and animals, leading to skin rashes, eye irritation, sickness, and in severe cases, neurological damage.
The timing of this warning adds to existing public concern, particularly amid ongoing anger directed at Thames Water. The utility company has faced criticism over its plans for treated sewage, and this latest incident raises further questions about the water quality in the iconic river.
Local residents and environmental groups have been vocal about the need for cleaner waterways, making this advisory a significant setback for river recreation in the capital.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will lift the warning once the water is deemed safe again.
Until then, the message is clear: stay out of the Thames at Ham Riverside for the safety of yourself and your furry companions.
