Donaldson, 63, stands accused of 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, involving two victims. The charges date back decades, spanning from 1985 to 2008.
During the second day of the trial, prosecutor Rosemary Walsh outlined the state’s case, alleging that Donaldson sexually assaulted a child and later apologized to her years after the incidents during a meeting brokered by a church. The court heard that the accusations involve two women, referred to as Witness A and Witness B, who came forward to police in March 2024 to report traumatic events from their childhood.
Donaldson’s wife, 60-year-old Eleanor Donaldson, is also implicated in the case. She faces charges of aiding and abetting rape and indecent assault. While Jeffrey Donaldson sat in the dock taking notes, his wife was not present. She has been judged unfit to stand trial on mental health grounds, meaning her case will proceed as a 'trial of the facts.' This process tests the evidence against her but cannot result in a criminal conviction.
According to the prosecution, Witness B alleged that Donaldson repeatedly touched her inappropriately before she was 11 years old. The jury, comprised of five women and seven men, was told that the evidence would include pre-recorded interviews with the complainants. These women will be cross-examined by legal teams but will not appear in person in the courtroom to testify.
Both Jeffrey and Eleanor Donaldson have pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial is expected to last approximately four weeks as the legal teams present their cases and the jury examines the recorded police interviews from the time of the couples' arrest.
