The girl, Anshika Gaud, was taken to a Mumbai hospital where she passed away on Friday night. Five students from the same class were reported to have performed the same punishment on November 8, according to local reports, sparking outrage and a formal inquiry into the school’s disciplinary methods.
Authorities say an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of death. A Block Education Officer stated that the inquiry will reveal the true circumstances surrounding the incident. At this stage, no police complaint has been filed, but officials say the inquiry will cover the events leading up to Anshika’s decline in health.
The girl’s mother described the punishment as inhuman, claiming her daughter’s health deteriorated rapidly after the exercise, with severe neck and back pain that left her unable to get up. She recounted confronting the school after learning of her daughter’s condition and said the teacher defended the punishment as a standard response to late attendance.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) representatives alleged that the girl had pre-existing health problems, but supporters of the family maintain that corporal punishment should never be used to discipline students. The incident has intensified calls for tighter safeguards against brutal disciplinary practices in schools and greater accountability for educators who employ corporal punishment.
As the investigation unfolds, families and educators alike are watching closely to see what reforms, if any, will follow this tragedy.
