This year's harvest is shaping up to be one of the worst on record, thanks to an exceptionally dry spring and scorching summer.
Experts are painting a grim picture. Tom Lancaster, a land, food, and farming analyst at the ECIU, explained, "At the start of spring farmers were hopeful of a better year, but the dry April and July and record-breaking heat have left farmers facing down the barrel of a third awful harvest in a row." He emphasized that farming is now the sector most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
The sentiment is echoed on the ground. Martin Lines, head of the Nature Friendly Farming Network and a farmer from Cambridgeshire, described this year's harvest as "a real kick in the teeth." He recounted how crops initially looked promising after two previous difficult years, only for months of drought and heatwaves to decimate any chance of a good yield. "I've never known it this dry and hot on our farm," Lines stated, adding that even farmers who were once skeptical about climate change are now deeply worried about the future of their businesses. It's been a "completely brutal" period for the industry, impacting not just current yields but also long-term sustainability.
