Closing Auction Shakes Markets: What Investors Need to Know
New Closing Auction System causing Sensex and Nifty to diverge? Market expert Sudip Bandyopadhyay explains the initial volatility and what to expect as traders adapt. Get the full story!
The introduction of the new Closing Auction Session (CAS) has stirred up significant volatility and an unusual divergence between India's benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty, leaving many investors perplexed.
Market participants, particularly on Tuesday, reported confusion with the new system, which affects the determination of official stock closing prices. This confusion was compounded by the weekly expiry of Nifty futures and options contracts, leading to unexpected derivative price movements and some traders reporting losses on their positions. The Sensex and Nifty have shown divergence for a second consecutive day, a direct impact of this new market mechanism.
However, market expert Sudip Bandyopadhyay, speaking to Business Today, offered a calming perspective. He explained that such fluctuations are a common occurrence whenever a new market mechanism is introduced. Bandyopadhyay anticipates that the system will stabilize within approximately a week as traders become more familiar and adapt to the new process.
While stabilization is expected, he also noted that Thursdays might continue to experience higher volatility, primarily due to the weekly Futures & Options (F&O) expiry. Despite the initial jitters, Bandyopadhyay emphasized the broader context: the closing auction system is widely adopted in global markets and is ultimately designed to lead to smoother and more efficient price discovery over time for equities. The current turbulence is seen as a transitional phase towards a more robust market close.
