In a surprising development, the Supreme Court has replaced two special judges who were overseeing crucial coal scam cases in Delhi. This significant judicial shake-up comes after an "unusual request" from the Delhi High Court, which stated that the judges were "better suited for certain other responsibilities."
Judges Sunena Sharma and Dheeraj Mor, who had been presiding over these high-profile cases, are the ones being moved. Sharma had taken charge just six months ago, while Mor had completed a little over a year in his role. The Delhi High Court lauded both judicial officers as being "of outstanding merit" and expressed a desire to utilize their talents in different capacities.
The Supreme Court, acknowledging the Delhi High Court's unique request, has approved the transfer. Taking their place will be Virender Kumar Kharta, previously a special judge of the NDPS court at Saket, and Ajay Garg, who served as an additional sessions judge at a fast-track court in Tis Hazari. Kharta will succeed Judge Sharma, and Garg will take over from Judge Mor.
This decision has raised eyebrows given the relatively short tenures of the transferred judges in such sensitive cases. The move ensures that while the faces overseeing these important investigations change, the judicial process continues with new appointments.
