Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah announced his resignation from the party on Monday, sending a letter to the leadership that caused a flutter as the state gears up for the Assembly polls. Within hours, senior party figures, including Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh and state president Gaurav Gogoi, hurried to Borah's Guwahati residence to persuade him to withdraw the move.
Borah told reporters outside his home that he had sought time from the Congress high command to reconsider the decision. "My old colleagues and central leaders have given certain suggestions. However, I have sought some time," he said, adding that he would take his family’s advice and inform the leadership by Tuesday morning. Later, officials indicated that a long discussion with Rahul Gandhi, lasting about 15 minutes, influenced the decision, and Borah subsequently withdrew his resignation.
He made clear that his unhappiness lay with the state leadership, warning that the party’s future would be uncertain if it continued on this path. He also kept the door open to future political moves, saying he could consider joining the BJP or regional outfits such as Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal or the Assam Jatiya Parishad, but that he would reveal the truth in due course and would not quit politics.
