Hillary Clinton, former US secretary of state and 2016 Democratic nominee, has publicly declared that President Joe Biden’s decision to seek a second term was "a terrible mistake" that ultimately cost the Democratic party the presidency in 2024. Speaking at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, Clinton asserted that Biden reneged on a prior commitment to step aside, a betrayal she believes proved catastrophic for his legacy and the country.
Clinton argued that if Biden had announced in late summer 2023 that he would not run, a genuine Democratic primary would have unfolded, producing a stronger nominee capable of defeating Donald Trump. "I believe whoever emerged from that contest, whether it was the vice-president or a governor or a senator or anybody else, would have beaten Donald Trump," she stated, calling Biden's decision to remain in the race "a terrible miscalculation."
Biden eventually abandoned his re-election bid in July 2024, following a widely criticized debate performance against Trump. His wife, Jill Biden, later revealed she suspected he was having a stroke during that debate. Following his withdrawal, Biden handed the nomination to Vice-President Kamala Harris in August, who subsequently lost the general election to Trump just a few months later.
While Clinton's claim that any Democrat would have beaten Trump warrants scrutiny, her comments highlight a significant internal debate within the Democratic party regarding the 2024 election outcome.
