For the first time, a piece of space junk has unintentionally crashed into the Moon, marking an unusual end to an 18-month journey for a Falcon 9 rocket upper stage. The defunct SpaceX booster, which was part of a mission launched seven years ago, made impact early Wednesday morning, creating a new crater on the lunar surface.
The incident involved the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket, which was originally used to launch NASA's Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite in 2015. After deploying its payload, the booster was left in a high orbit, eventually drifting into a chaotic trajectory influenced by Earth, Moon, and Sun's gravity. Its path was tracked by astronomers, who predicted the inevitable collision well in advance.
Weighing approximately four tonnes, or 8,800 pounds, the rocket stage struck the far side of the Moon at an incredible speed of about 5,400 miles per hour (8,700 kilometers per hour). While the impact was significant enough to create a new crater, it poses no known threat to Earth or ongoing lunar missions. Scientists hope that observations of the new crater could offer insights into the Moon's subsurface composition.
This event highlights the growing issue of space debris, not only in Earth's orbit but also in interplanetary space. Although the Moon lacks an atmosphere, which means no fiery re-entry, the accumulation of discarded rocket stages and defunct satellites continues to be a concern for future space exploration and astronomical observation.
