Heartbreaking Nursery Blaze: 14 Newborns Dead, Pakistan Demands Answers

A nation mourns a devastating loss following a tragic fire at a hospital nursery in Islamabad, Pakistan, which claimed the lives of 14 innocent newborns. The heart-wrenching incident, which occurred early Wednesday at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), has sparked widespread grief and calls for urgent answers regarding hospital safety protocols. The fire was confined to the third-floor nursery, where 15 babies were present. Despite the immediate efforts of two doctors, two nurses, and other staff, only one infant could be rescued from the rapidly escalating inferno. The scene at PIMS was somber, with access restricted to the affected area as medical professionals, patients, and grieving relatives processed the immense tragedy.

Authorities have since handed over the bodies of all 14 newborns to their families, allowing them to begin the difficult process of saying goodbye. In response to the national outcry, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif swiftly appointed a high-level investigating committee, led by retired federal secretary Shahid Khan.

This committee is tasked with gathering statements from hospital staff, witnesses, and families, aiming to deliver urgent recommendations to the Prime Minister within 48 hours and a comprehensive report within five days.

The public eagerly awaits their findings, hoping for clarity and accountability.

Initial reports on the fire's origin have been conflicting.

Hospital and district officials first suggested an exploding air-conditioning unit was to blame. However, a preliminary report from the hospital later indicated that a blast involving a nebulizer sparked the blaze, which spread rapidly due to the high concentration of oxygen within the nursery.

The investigating committee has emphasized that they will conduct an independent assessment to determine the definitive cause, unswayed by prior speculations.

Beyond the immediate investigation, the tragedy has prompted a broader reevaluation of fire-safety measures across Pakistan's healthcare facilities.

In Punjab, the country's most populous province, the government has already instructed its Health Department to conduct immediate reviews of fire-safety systems and emergency-response capabilities. Furthermore, in a significant move, Health Secretary Aslam Ghauri was dismissed following the incident, signaling a strong commitment from the government to address systemic issues and prevent future catastrophes.
