Reflecting Pool Drama: Trump Claims 'Vandals' After Algae Battle
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool saga continues! Trump claims 'vandals' attacked it, but critics point to a botched renovation. Get the full story on the green pool controversy.
President Donald Trump has ignited a new controversy, claiming “vandals” poured chemicals into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This accusation comes after his own team had already attempted to treat a severe algae problem plaguing the multi-million-dollar renovation project with bleach.
The pool, located across from the iconic Lincoln Memorial, was part of a grand renovation effort that Trump had promised would result in “the most beautiful thing that you've ever seen.” It was reportedly painted an “American flag blue,” but just days after its completion, the paint began to chip, and the pool water turned an unsightly green. This rapid deterioration led to questions about the quality of the renovation work.
In response to the escalating issues, the Trump administration resorted to pouring hydrogen peroxide into the pool to combat the algae. Amid this, Trump took to Truth Social, asserting that “chemicals have been illegally placed in the water” and even claiming a “300-foot-long gash” was made in the basin. He suggested these acts of vandalism, rather than poor craftsmanship, were the root cause of the pool’s problems.
The Interior Department later stated that “advanced nanobubbler technology” was also employed to address the algae, and they declared the pool “crystal clear.” However, they conceded that a National Park Service team still needed to vacuum up residual algae in certain sections. The exact chemicals Trump accused vandals of using remain unspecified.
The administration’s claims have not gone unchallenged. US Olympian David Hearn, among others, has publicly cast doubt on the vandalism narrative, suggesting it's “just another lie” from the administration. The ongoing saga leaves many questioning the true state of the Reflecting Pool and the integrity of the renovation project.
