The San Francisco residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was targeted in a suspected arson attempt when a Molotov cocktail was thrown at his home around 3:45 am. The device reportedly bounced off the house and caused no injuries.
Police later arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Alejandro Daniel Moreno-Gama, in connection with the attack. The same individual is tied to a separate threat at OpenAI’s headquarters on 3rd Street, where officers detained him after the earlier incident.
Altman wrote on his personal blog, sharing a rare photo of his husband and their child. He said the image is meant to show that words and narratives matter, and he hopes it might deter the next person from attacking their home.
He noted that the incident has amplified concerns about rising hostility toward AI and the public discourse surrounding technology. He described his initial hesitation to publish but said the gesture was intentional to reduce harm.
No injuries were reported, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
