Karnataka to boost Kannada in AI era, CM Siddaramaiah vows
CM Siddaramaiah outlines a plan to prepare Kannada for the AI era, pushing mother-tongue education, upgrading schools, and expanding Kannada instruction across madrasas.
At the 70th Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations, the Chief Minister outlined a plan to prepare Kannada for the AI era, aiming to ensure that technological advances do not lead to job losses in the state. The government will strengthen Kannada's role in the digital age and enlist scholars and technical experts to make Kannada a language of modern technology, ensuring the state's people stay at the forefront of the AI revolution. Think, learn, dream in Kannada, he emphasized, warning that English and Hindi have gradually weakened children’s creativity by distancing them from their mother tongue. He called on the Centre to enact suitable laws to guarantee education in the mother tongue.
As part of the policy push, the government unveiled a major upgrade plan for schools: 800 Kannada-medium and 100 Urdu-medium schools will be developed under the Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) model at an estimated cost of ₹2,500 crore. Kannada will be taught in 180 madrasas this year, with the expansion to all 1,500 madrasas in the coming years. To support these efforts, ₹483 crore has been sanctioned to upgrade 100 Urdu schools under the KPS model, signaling an inclusive effort to ensure children from all communities learn Kannada and participate in the state’s AI-ready education drive.
The overarching aim is to empower local language education in a technology-driven future, balancing linguistic heritage with modern skill development, and ensuring that the state’s youth are not left behind in the global AI era.
