The recent heatwaves that scorched England and Wales in May and June claimed an estimated 2,700 lives prematurely, with the peak in June seeing a staggering 440 deaths per day. Scientists have revealed that more than 40% of these heatwave-related deaths, roughly 1,080 individuals, would not have occurred without the 1.4°C of human-caused global heating we've experienced to date. The climate crisis is effectively supercharging temperatures, adding an estimated 3°C to 4°C to the heat, making these conditions far more perilous than they would naturally be.
To put these figures into perspective, government statistics show about four people die daily from road traffic collisions, and around 35 per day due to alcohol and drug use. The daily death toll during the heatwave peak was significantly higher, highlighting the critical public health emergency extreme heat presents.
Dr. Clair Barnes from Imperial College London, who spearheaded this analysis, underscored the gravity of the situation. "These are big numbers and we don't want to see this many people dying," she stated, adding, "We've reached the point where the heat is so extreme that we can't help but acknowledge the impacts it has."
The severity of the June heatwave prompted the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office to issue unprecedented red warnings for three consecutive days, signaling danger to life for everyone. While the very young, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions are most vulnerable, the warnings emphasized a risk to all. Environmental groups like Friends of the Earth have gone so far as to label the UK's lack of preparedness a "national scandal."
Experts stress that as long as fossil fuel burning continues to pump pollution into our atmosphere, extreme temperatures will only worsen. This data serves as an urgent call for drastic cuts in emissions and immediate, effective measures to protect people from the escalating impacts of global heating.
