Goyal Hints Good News Soon on India-US Trade Deal
India's commerce minister signals a fair, balanced India-US trade pact is on the horizon, with protections for farmers, fishermen and workers.
In New Delhi, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said there is no hiatus in the Indo-US relationship and that good news on a trade deal will come only when it is fair, equitable, and balanced. The bilateral partnership is described as very important and strategic, and negotiations are a process that must protect India's farmers, fishermen, small industries, and workers. When the right balance is found, outcomes will follow. He pointed to long-term steps like a 10-year defence pact and the LPG supply agreement for about 2.2 million tonnes per annum as evidence of durable ties.
He also spoke about helping the fisheries and marine sector after the US tariffs hit it hard. He noted ongoing diversification with Russia set to approve nearly 25 fishery establishments and talks with the UAE to diversify India's shrimp and fish exports. The European Union has approved 102 additional marine product units from India for exports.
The minister said the government is ready with the third edition of the Jan Vishwas bill to ease doing business, aiming to decriminalise provisions wherever possible and make life easier for businesses and the community. Jan Vishwas-II has been discussed, and a fresh bill may be introduced.
On trade talks with the EU, Goyal said progress is encouraging and he is confident of an understanding in the coming months once a few last-mile issues are resolved.
The overall message is that the India-US relationship remains a stability anchor in a volatile global environment, and both sides are equally committed to expanding trade and commerce while protecting domestic stakeholders.
