She revealed that the vision for a political future for their family originated with her husband, long before Vijay himself had formally stepped into the political arena. This dream took root as early as 2009, the year Vijay launched his welfare initiative, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam.
Recalling their initial apprehension, Shobha admitted to her and her husband's fears when Vijay decided to enter politics and contest elections. "We knew many tried and failed in politics, while others aimed for the CM post and were not able to do it either," she explained. However, witnessing the immense and fervent fanbase Vijay commanded across the state gradually instilled in them the confidence that his political aspirations had a strong chance of success.
The path from founding a welfare organisation in 2009 to occupying the Chief Minister's chair in 2026 was not without its internal challenges, even within the family. A notable moment of friction occurred in 2020 when S.A. Chandrasekhar attempted to register Vijay Makkal Iyakkam as a political party without his son's knowledge, naming himself general secretary and Shobha as treasurer. Vijay publicly distanced himself from this move at the time, leading to a temporary strain that was eventually repaired.
By the time Vijay's party, TVK, made its electoral debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election, securing an impressive 108 out of 234 seats, Shobha Chandrasekhar was once again openly and warmly celebrating her son's triumph. Her public support underscored the family's united front following the earlier disagreements.
