Instagram rolls out 'Your Algorithm' for Reels, giving you control
Instagram's Your Algorithm offers a personalised Reels dashboard, letting you tweak topics, add interests, and share your summary as a Story.
Instagram is rolling out a new feature called Your Algorithm for Reels, a dashboard accessed via a small icon in the top-right corner of the app. The dashboard shows a personalized snapshot of the topics the platform believes matter most to you, generated by AI from your in-app behavior. The topics appear in a two-line header topped with hearts, followed by a detailed list of interests Instagram thinks you've recently engaged with. The update aims to give users more control over what appears in Reels, and eventually other parts of the app, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all algorithm.
You can interact with the topics: tap any item to indicate you want to see more or less of it. Over time, your Reels recommendations adapt based on these choices. If something you truly care about isn’t listed, you can type it in manually to add it to your profile, ensuring your interest picture reflects you rather than the algorithm’s guess. You can also share your Your Algorithm summary as a Story, turning it into a social moment just like Spotify Wrapped.
Instagram notes that this is the start of broader personalization and is launching in the United States first, with plans to roll out to English-speaking users worldwide soon. The company suggests future expansion could bring similar options to Explore and other surfaces. The feature follows a trend toward giving people more control over what they see, a line of development also seen in TikTok’s recent attempts to let users manage topics, though Instagram’s approach is more individualized.
Industry watchers say the update could reduce scrolling fatigue and help creators reach more relevant audiences by aligning content with expressed interests. While the change may take some time to adjust to, early testers see it as a practical way to tailor feeds without sacrificing discovery. Instagram says this is only the beginning, with more personalization options likely to come.
