California's Shrey Parikh Wins the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee!

A 14-year-old from California has just etched his name into the history books. Shrey Parikh emerged victorious at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home the top prize after an intense three-day competition held at Washington's Constitution Hall. In a thrilling conclusion to the 101-year-old contest, Shrey faced off against 247 other talented spellers, eventually finding himself in a head-to-head lightning round.

The final showdown was a race against the clock. Shrey and 12-year-old runner-up Ishaan Gupta from New Jersey were tasked with spelling as many words as possible in just 90 seconds. Shrey showcased incredible speed and accuracy, correctly spelling 32 words. The word that officially sealed his victory was "cashaw," a specific type of pumpkin. Ishaan put up a valiant effort, successfully spelling 25 words from the same list.

Despite his calm appearance on stage, Shrey admitted to having some nerves during the event. He shared that even when he knew a word, the pressure of the stage made him second-guess himself. Ultimately, he decided to trust his gut, a decision that earned him the illustrious trophy and a $52,000 cash prize. This year’s finals featured nine incredible students aged 12 to 14, representing five states and the District of Columbia, all showcasing the power of hard work and dedication.
