Bus Conductor Gets 5 Years RI for Sexually Abusing Minor Girl

In a significant ruling, the Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Special Court on Monday sentenced a bus conductor to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of ₹15,000 for sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl. Special Judge Anju Meera Birla delivered the verdict against Arun Kumar, 46, from Aruvikkara.
Should Arun Kumar default on the fine payment, he faces an additional six months of imprisonment. The court's judgment also stipulated that the fine amount, alongside compensation from the District Legal Services Authority, must be provided to the survivor, emphasizing support for the victim.
The incident, as detailed by Special Public Prosecutor R.S. Vijay Mohan, occurred on September 23, 2024, inside a crowded bus traveling from Vellanad to East Fort. The accused was the conductor on a route the young survivor regularly used for her school commute. On that particular morning, he molested the girl while the bus was packed.
Initially, the frightened girl did not disclose the traumatic incident to anyone. With no alternative transportation available, she was forced to continue commuting on the same bus, encountering her abuser daily. This agonizing situation led to severe depression, which was only discovered when she was taken to a psychologist for treatment. Following this, the Museum police registered a case, leading to the trial where the prosecution presented 17 witnesses and 25 documents to secure the conviction.
