A Tony-nominated playwright and actor known for Emily in Paris has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of drug smuggling. Jeremy O. Harris, 36, has been in custody since November 16 after customs officials at Okinawa airport allegedly found ecstasy in his bag. Local authorities filed a criminal accusation with a regional prosecutor’s office on December 4 to begin formal charges. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison. Harris’ representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
Harris rose to prominence with the Broadway play Slave Play, which earned a record number of Tony nominations in 2020. He also wrote the 2020 feature Zola and has appeared in the TV series Euphoria. His latest stage work, Spirit of the People, debuted at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts in July.
Reporting indicates Harris traveled to Okinawa for sightseeing from the United Kingdom, with a layover in Taiwan before arriving in Japan. While authorities have not indicated whether he has admitted to the allegations, multiple outlets have cited the ongoing nature of the case and the possibility of prosecution in the coming weeks.
