India has reached a significant milestone in its journey towards self-reliance in advanced aerospace and defense technologies with the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) of the indigenous Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently handed over the FOC to the Indian Air Force (IAF), marking the system's readiness for full-fledged service nearly nine years after its Initial Operational Clearance in 2017.
Netra is India’s first indigenously developed AEW&C system. Mounted on a Brazilian-made Embraer EMB-145 aircraft, it serves as an airborne surveillance and battle management platform. Its primary function is to detect, track, identify, and monitor airborne and maritime targets over long distances, significantly enhancing the network-centric operations capabilities of the IAF.
Often referred to as India's 'eye in the sky', the Netra system overcomes the limitations of ground-based radars, which are restricted by terrain and the Earth’s curvature. By operating at high altitudes, the AEW&C aircraft can monitor vast stretches of airspace, providing earlier detection of aircraft, missiles, and drones. This capability gives commanders a real-time, comprehensive picture of the aerial battlefield.
The system is equipped with an indigenous Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, one of the most advanced radar technologies available today. Unlike traditional mechanically rotating radars, the AESA radar electronically steers its beams, allowing it to detect and track multiple targets simultaneously with superior speed and accuracy. Beyond the radar, Netra integrates a suite of advanced mission systems, including Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR), Electronic Support Measures (ESM), Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), secure communication systems, Line-of-Sight (LOS) and Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) data links, and a self-protection suite. This makes India only the fifth country in the world to develop such an advanced indigenous capability.
