Indie darlings Sadurn have gifted fans with a compelling new single, "never tell me," offering another tantalizing glimpse into their eagerly awaited album, "The Underworld," set to release this October. This track follows the previously released lead single, "whole thing," building anticipation for what promises to be a captivating collection of songs. Fans might recognize "never tell me" as it has been a staple, often played as the closing number, in the band's live sets even before the release of their 2022 debut album, "Radiator."
The new single is a rich tapestry woven from elements of alt-country, bedroom pop, and indie rock, showcasing Sadurn's distinctive sound. Adding to the excitement, "never tell me" arrives complete with a unique, puppet-led music video that perfectly complements the song's artistic depth.
Vocalist G DeGroot shared personal insights into the song's creation, revealing, "'never tell me' is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written, I think." DeGroot explained that the song began to take shape in 2021 during a period of heartbreak, stating, "It started emerging in 2021 at the moment of a breakup, and then I became too depressed to finish it for another six months." This delay, however, proved to be a blessing in disguise, allowing the song to be developed collaboratively with the full band. "The upside of that is that I was able to write it alongside the full band - we had only recently started playing together, and it was really fun to be able to bring a song to them while it was still in progress."
DeGroot highlighted how this collaborative process marks a significant evolution for Sadurn's sound, differentiating "The Underworld" from their previous work. "I think that’s something that sets this album apart from Radiator - those earlier songs I had written for Sadurn as an acoustic duo and then adapted to a full band, whereas these ones were mostly written with a band in mind." This organic development with the band promises an even more cohesive and dynamic sound for the upcoming album.
