A sweeping delimitation plan would enlarge the Lok Sabha, with all states expected to see an increase in seats by about half while preserving their current proportional strength in Parliament. The government plans to introduce the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill and the Delimitation Bill in Parliament as debate opens. The drafts propose increasing the total Lok Sabha seats from 543 to about 850, based on the 2011 census, and reserving roughly a third of seats for women. A new Delimitation Commission would be formed to redraw constituencies accordingly, and the commission’s work would follow the passage of the bills.
