PM Burnham Summons UK Leaders for Jobs & Economy Summit!

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a significant summit set to take place this autumn, bringing together the leaders of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to address crucial economic challenges facing the United Kingdom. The announcement came during Burnham's inaugural official visit to Wales since stepping into the role of Prime Minister in July.

The summit, scheduled for October at the National Economic Council, will see the Prime Minister meet with the First Ministers of Wales and Scotland, alongside the First and Deputy First Ministers of Northern Ireland. Burnham, who succeeded Sir Keir Starmer after winning the Makerfield by-election, emphasized his commitment to fostering 'good jobs in every community, in every part of the UK.' He stated, 'The answers to the UK's challenges will not come from an echo chamber.

They will come from the places that know their own strengths, and from a government willing to listen and then act.' During his 'listening tour' in South Wales, the Prime Minister is engaging with local workers and apprentices to discuss vital issues such as reindustrialisation, job creation, and the escalating cost of living.

This hands-on approach aims to gather insights directly from communities.

Welsh Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams, who met with Burnham during his visit, hailed the engagement as 'a positive example of governments working together to improve people's lives.' Williams is expected to advocate for specific support from the UK government, including a fair share of the steel fund, an energy social tariff to alleviate fuel poverty, and solutions for high standing charges in Wales.
