Notting Hill Carnival: 60th Anniversary Rocked by 169 Arrests, Police Praise 'Positive' Vibe

London is buzzing as preparations are underway for day two of the iconic Notting Hill Carnival, despite a significant number of arrests made on its opening day. Europe's largest street party, celebrating its 60th anniversary, has been hailed by police as 'overwhelmingly positive' for the majority of attendees, even as 169 arrests were reported. Sunday, designated as the family day, showcased a vibrant display of Caribbean culture.

Hundreds of thousands of revellers immersed themselves in the festivities, which featured an array of mas bands, steel pan bands, and dancers. The streets of west London came alive with colour, glitter, and feathers, as participants donned elaborate costumes and towering headdresses, a cherished tradition.

Soundsystems pulsed with diverse music, from samba and house to reggae, with Soca music, a blend of American soul and Caribbean rhythms, proving to be the most popular. Organizers proudly bill the event as 'the greatest community-led event on the planet,' attracting an estimated two million people over the two-day period.

Despite the festive and celebratory atmosphere, the Metropolitan Police confirmed 169 arrests by 7:45 PM on Sunday.

Offences included possession of drugs and possession of weapons.

As the carnival enters its second day, authorities continue to monitor the situation while celebrating the cultural significance and widespread enjoyment of this momentous 60th anniversary.
