Congress Shakes Up Leadership: Sachin Pilot Takes Charge of Punjab!

In a significant organizational overhaul, the Congress party has appointed Sachin Pilot as the new All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Punjab, a state gearing up for Assembly elections in early 2027.

This crucial change sees former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who previously held the Punjab charge, moved to Assam as the new Congress general secretary for that state. The reshuffle, announced by general secretary (organisation) K.C.

Venugopal, was made by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and takes effect immediately.

The appointment of Sachin Pilot, known for his role as a senior poll observer in Kerala where the Congress-led United Democratic Front secured an impressive victory, is particularly notable for Punjab. The state Congress unit has been grappling with intense factionalism, most notably between the camps of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

This internal strife had not only created negative public perception but also stalled a proposed political yatra by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

By bringing in Pilot, the Congress high command appears to be making a determined effort to press the 'reset button' and contain the ongoing factionalism. While not necessarily a snub to Mr. Baghel, the move underscores the party's intent to bring stability and unity to the state unit ahead of the critical elections.

Alongside Pilot's appointment, other significant changes include Randeep Singh Surjewala, who will now handle Gujarat in addition to his existing responsibilities in Karnataka. Surjewala's expanded role seems to be a reward for ensuring a smooth transition of leadership in Karnataka following the Assembly elections.

Gujarat is also scheduled to hold its Assembly elections later next year, making Surjewala's new charge equally pivotal.
