BCCI condemns molestation of Australian women cricketers in Indore
The BCCI condemns an incident in Indore where two Australian women cricketers were harassed; authorities arrested the suspect as safety measures are reviewed.
Two Australian women cricketers were followed and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist as they walked from their hotel to a cafe near Indore during the Women’s World Cup. The incident occurred around 11 am, roughly half a kilometre from their hotel.
Police swiftly arrested the accused, identified as Akil Khan, after investigators reviewed CCTV footage, hotel records, and security statements. He has prior criminal cases on record and faces charges under sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the act as very condemnable but stray, reaffirming India's hospitality and zero tolerance. He thanked the Madhya Pradesh State Police for their prompt action and said the board will review safety protocols if required to tighten security for visiting teams.
Team security officer Danny Simmons said security arrangements were immediately coordinated to assist the players, and investigators are continuing to pursue all leads, including CCTV and eyewitness accounts.
As the Women’s World Cup unfolds, the incident has renewed discussions about safeguarding visiting teams in host cities, with the BCCI pledging to bolster safety measures and cooperate with authorities.
