Honeymoon Horror: Newlywed Suffers 60% Burns in Darjeeling Barbecue Blaze

A dream honeymoon took a devastating turn for a newly married couple in Darjeeling, West Bengal, after a barbecue incident at a local homestay left the wife with severe burns and her husband injured while trying to save her. The incident, which occurred on the night of September 17, 2026, at a homestay in Sitong, saw newlywed Nikita Saha suffer 60% burns.

Her husband, Samir Das, sustained injuries while bravely attempting to extinguish the flames that engulfed his wife.

Police confirmed on Friday (September 18, 2026) that the fire allegedly broke out after kerosene was poured onto the barbecue instead of cooking oil. Nikita Saha is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Siliguri, while Samir Das was discharged after receiving initial medical attention for his burns.

The couple, residents of Chopra in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district, had been married for approximately two months after a long-term relationship and were celebrating their honeymoon in Sitong. A senior police officer stated that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far. The family has lodged a complaint against the homestay at the Kurseong police station, prompting an official investigation.

a police officer stated, adding that CCTV footage from the homestay and the jar containing the liquid have been seized as evidence. The CCTV footage reportedly shows flames spreading rapidly after a liquid was poured onto the barbecue, causing Nikita to catch fire.

While Mr. Das alleged that turpentine oil was poured onto the barbecue, homestay owner Nihal Ayan reportedly acknowledged an employee's negligence, admitting that kerosene was mistakenly used instead of cooking oil. Furthermore, the victim's family has accused the homestay authorities of failing to implement adequate safety precautions and of delaying crucial assistance after the incident.

A vehicle was called to take Nikita to the hospital, but it allegedly arrived about 40 minutes later. She was initially taken to a local hospital and subsequently shifted to a private hospital in Siliguri,

the officer elaborated. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the circumstances and ensure accountability.
