Larry David, the acclaimed comedian known for his unapologetic candor, reportedly squared off in a hilarious exchange with none other than former President Barack Obama during the production of their new HBO limited series, "Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness." According to director and co-creator Jeff Schafer, David playfully asserted his authority over the show with the retort, "Yeah, but I'm the president of this," after Obama attempted to offer a note.
The seven-episode sketch comedy, which premiered recently, was produced by Higher Ground, the Obamas’ production company, and aims to retell American history through humor and satire. Obama, 64, was evidently keen on the project from the outset, arriving at an early meeting well-versed in the material and expressing his enthusiasm. Schafer praised the input from Obama and his Higher Ground team as "invaluable."
However, when the former President offered "a few notes about something," David was quick to brush him off. Schafer recounted Obama's amused reaction: "I spent a half an hour talking about how funny everything is. I give you one note and you get into a defensive crouch." Obama then highlighted his presidential experience, stating, "When I was in the Oval Office, I took advice and listened to my advisors, and I was the president of the United States." To which David famously retorted, "Yeah, but I'm the president of this."
This real-life dynamic even found its way into a promotional clip for the series. In the trailer, Obama humorously stated, "I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of the globe’s most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David." He added, with a touch of relief, "I’m just a producer on the show. So I don’t have to deal with him day-to-day but still, it’s a lot." The limited series also features a cameo by the former president himself, promising more of this unique collaboration. The series promises a fresh, comedic look at history, infused with David's signature style.
