Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has sharply criticized his right-wing rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, accusing him of "treason" for requesting a delay in potential U.S. tariff hikes until after Brazil's upcoming October presidential elections. This accusation comes amid a tightening race between Mr. Lula, a leftist, and Mr. Bolsonaro, the son of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.
The controversy centers on a proposal by the U.S. to impose a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian imports, effective July 22, citing what it calls unfair trade practices. These tariffs have become a hot-button issue in the campaign. In a document sent to the United States Trade Representative on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Mr. Bolsonaro suggested postponing the tariffs' implementation until after the October vote. He argued that delaying the measure would prevent it from being interpreted as an attempt to influence the outcome of the elections.
However, Mr. Lula vehemently disagreed, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express his outrage. "Asking that the brutal rate hike against our country be postponed until after the elections is yet another act of treason against the homeland," he declared. Mr. Lula further accused his rival of actively lobbying the White House to push for these tariffs in the first place.
Flavio Bolsonaro, however, denies these accusations of lobbying. Last week, he stated publicly that he had requested to testify at a hearing, aiming to prevent the introduction of the tariffs, not to facilitate them or delay them for political gain. U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to make a final decision on whether to impose the measure by July 15. The situation is further complicated by President Trump's known close relationships with right-wing leaders across Latin America, including Bolsonaro senior, who was previously convicted of plotting a coup in 2022.
