Selena Gomez, the pop icon and entrepreneur, is currently embroiled in a significant legal battle concerning her mental health startup, Wondermind. Investors have filed a lawsuit accusing Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey, and co-founder Daniella Pierson of defrauding them of nearly $1.2 million, alleging they were misled about the company's infrastructure, leadership, and resources.
The lawsuit, which names Gomez, Teefey, Pierson, and Wondermind Global Inc., includes counts of alleged securities fraud, common law fraud, and breach of contract. Plaintiffs Wondermind SRS 44, LLC and Bespoke Wondermind SPV 1, LLC claim they were led to believe that substantial revenue streams, such as a "groundbreaking" app, advertising deals, and celebrity cover stories, were already in motion for the company.
However, the complaint asserts a starkly different reality, alleging that "for three years, while the Company quietly collapsed around them, not one of its founders, officers, or directors said a word to the investors whose money was funding the collapse." The plaintiffs are seeking to recover their investments in Wondermind, in addition to damages and costs.
In a firm response, Selena Gomez's attorney, Mathew S. Rosengart, issued a statement vehemently denying the allegations. Rosengart declared, "The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported 'fraud' or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally." He further stated that Gomez's legal team intends to "vigorously defend these false allegations and indeed are filing a motion to dismiss the baseless claims against her."
The investors reportedly did not discover the full extent of the facts underlying their claims until an article published by The Cut last year shed light on the startup's operations and alleged internal tensions. This legal challenge puts the spotlight on the complexities and risks involved in celebrity-backed ventures, particularly those operating in the sensitive mental health space.
