Scotland Mourns Dolly Parton: First Minister Hails Literacy Legacy
First Minister John Swinney expresses deep sadness at Dolly Parton's passing, highlighting her beloved Imagination Library's profound impact on child literacy across Scotland.
The world is in mourning following the passing of beloved country music legend and philanthropist Dolly Parton. First Minister John Swinney led tributes from Scotland, expressing his deep sadness and acknowledging her extraordinary charity work, which has profoundly touched countless lives, particularly in Scotland.
Swinney shared his condolences on X, praising Parton's global efforts to distribute books to children, a mission she championed through her Imagination Library. In April, the Scottish Government had proudly announced its partnership with The Dollywood Foundation, Parton's non-profit organization dedicated to fostering literacy and education among young people.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has already established a significant presence in several Scottish regions, including Dundee, Fife, Renfrewshire, and Helensburgh. Her initiative provides free books to children, igniting a love for reading from an early age. Mr.
Swinney's tribute on X underscored this impact: “Deeply saddened by the news of Dolly Parton's death.
In Scotland, her Imagination Library inspired a love of reading and provided thousands of free books for children. Her warmth, generosity and her music were truly one of a kind. My thoughts are with her family and friends.” Parton founded The Imagination Library in 1995 with a heartfelt mission to distribute books to children in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee.
Its success led to a national rollout across the U.S. in 2000, and within three years, the program had mailed an astonishing one million books. The initiative's expansion to Scotland further solidified her global commitment to promoting literacy.
Tributes have poured in from around the globe, recognizing Parton's immense contributions beyond her musical career.
The Library of Congress in Washington D.C. lauded her as a "titan of children's literacy," recalling her 2018 visit to donate the 100 millionth book to their collection and host a memorable story time. US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon also paid tribute, noting that Parton's "music, storytelling, and generous spirit enriched Ameri" lives.
Dolly Parton's legacy will undoubtedly endure, not only through her iconic music but also through the lasting impact of her charitable endeavors, which continue to inspire and educate children worldwide, including those in Scotland.
