It’s never too late to chase your dreams, and Sir Anthony Hopkins is living proof. At 88 years old, the legendary actor has signed a record deal with Decca Classics to release "Life Is a Dream," a new album featuring more than six decades of his original musical compositions.
The album is a star-studded affair, with tracks conducted by the acclaimed Gustavo Dudamel and performed by the prestigious Philharmonia Orchestra. Music has been a lifelong passion for Hopkins, who began playing the piano at just four years old and started composing for local plays during his teenage years.
The first single from the album, "Bracken Road," is particularly special. It's part of Hopkins’ "1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra" and draws inspiration from his childhood memories of Margam, South Wales. A press release describes it as "a nostalgic musical portrait of the streets, meadows, farmland and mountains that surrounded his family home in the 1940s." Other compositions on the album include "My Fatherland," inspired by traditional Welsh melodies, alongside pieces influenced by cinema, his wife, and his niece.
Hopkins shared his deep connection to music, stating, "Music was my first desire, my first wish. I’ve been composing music all my life. Some of these pieces have lived with me for decades and I still find myself returning to them." He expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity, adding, "Signing with Decca is the honour of a lifetime. It has been a true privilege to collaborate with the distinguished Philharmonia Orchestra and the virtuoso soloists, cellist Gregorio Nieto and classical pianist Sergio Tiempo." He also praised Dudamel, saying, "My deepest gratitude and respect go to Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, whose artistry is an integral part of this musical journey. With the graceful precision of his baton, he transformed each note with profound and indelible meaning, creating a pictorial landscape that invites the listener to feel and imagine something uniquely personal."
Beyond Dudamel and the Philharmonia, the album features other incredible talents, including pianist Sergio Tiempo, cellist Gregorio Nieto, the Bach Choir, and the Boy Choristers of Winchester Cathedral. The entire project was recorded at Alexandra Palace in London this past April. Dudamel himself commented on Hopkins, calling him "one of those rare artists whose crea...", celebrating his multifaceted artistic genius.
