Extreme El Niño Incoming! UK Faces Storms, World Sees Record Heat & Drought

The world is on the cusp of an “unprecedented” El Niño event, a natural phenomenon in the Pacific that significantly influences global weather patterns. Experts are sounding the alarm, stating this year’s El Niño is set to bring more storms and rain to the UK, while impacting harvests and temperatures worldwide, warning we are “in for one hell of a ride.”
Typically, an El Niño is declared when sea temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific rise 0.5°C above the long-term average, with conditions usually between 1°C and 2°C above average. However, forecasts indicate that this event will see sea temperatures soar more than 3°C above average in the coming months, making it the “largest since the 19th century,” according to the Met Office.
The ripple effects of this powerful El Niño will be felt globally. While north-western Europe, including the UK, should prepare for wetter and stormier conditions this autumn and early winter, other regions face severe challenges. A heightened risk of drought is predicted for the tropics, southern Africa, and north-east Australia.
This naturally occurring warming phenomenon is now amplified by human-made climate change. Professor Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We should be clear that this is an unprecedented event. I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts.” This powerful combination means that 2027 is now forecast to be the hottest year on record for the world.
Professor Hayley Fowler from Newcastle University reiterated this concern, noting that while El Niño is a natural cycle, it is now occurring in a “climate already loaded towards extreme heat” due to burning fossil fuels. The last strong El Niño in late 2015 brought devastating impacts, including Storm Desmond, which caused massive flooding in the UK. This year’s event could bring similar or even more severe conditions, alongside warnings of potential hikes in global food prices.
