Khaleda Zia Placed on Ventilator as Health Deteriorates
Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia is on ventilator in Dhaka as doctors monitor organ stress and serious infections.
Bangladesh's former prime minister Khaleda Zia, 80, has been declared critically ill and placed on ventilator support as doctors monitor a cascade of complications at Dhaka's Evercare Hospital.
A medical board said she is under round-the-clock care by a team of local and foreign specialists, with several of her vital organs under severe stress. Her kidney function has stopped, and she is undergoing regular dialysis, while blood transfusions are being provided as needed.
Doctors also indicated issues with the aortic valve, prompting a Transoesophageal Echocardiogram that confirmed infective endocarditis, a serious heart-valve infection. Treatment has begun in line with international guidelines. Earlier, she had been receiving high-flow nasal oxygen and BiPAP support, but doctors decided to move to elective ventilator support to rest the lungs and organs.
In addition, her doctors reported acute pancreatitis diagnosed later in November, while the anti-infective medications were being adjusted to combat severe infections. There is no public timetable for her recovery yet; hospital officials have stressed the need for careful monitoring as the situation evolves.
Supporters and watchers are awaiting further updates as the medical board and treating physicians continue to assess her condition.
