Sonia Gandhi Memoir Dropped: Political Storm Erupts Over "Belonging"

A major political controversy has erupted following the clarification from Penguin Random House India that it will not be publishing Sonia Gandhi's much-anticipated memoir, titled 'Belonging'. This development has sparked a heated exchange between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with each side leveling serious accusations. The Congress party has swiftly alleged government pressure behind Penguin's decision.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi pointed out that Penguin India readily publishes books like 'Exam Warriors' and several on the RSS, implying a double standard and suggesting that certain elements within the BJP government are "afraid of a book being read by the people of India." This accusation paints a picture of censorship and an attempt to control narratives.

On the other side, the BJP has launched an offensive, questioning the nature of Gandhi's memoir.

A BJP spokesperson invoked the 2014 autobiography of late K Natwar Singh, 'One Life Is Not Enough', to draw parallels. They highlighted how uneasy the Nehru-Gandhi family was about Singh's account of events in May 2004, leading Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to meet him before his book release.

The BJP questioned why Sonia Gandhi was so apprehensive about Singh's writings then, and now, what portions of her own memoir would warrant "fact-checking" to the extent of its publication being stalled. Further escalating their attack, the BJP also brought up the long-standing issue of 51 carton boxes of Jawaharlal Nehru's correspondence, which reportedly include letters to Edwina Mountbatten.

They challenged Congress leaders, who claim "some are afraid" of the memoir's contents, to explain why the "Congress first family is nervous and jittery" about making Nehru's historical documents public. The sudden non-publication of 'Belonging' has undoubtedly stirred a political hornet's nest.

While the Congress frames it as an attack on freedom of expression and political interference, the BJP uses it to raise questions about transparency and historical narratives within the Gandhi family.
