A four-year-old girl was abducted from her home in the Hooghly district, near Kolkata, in the early hours. The family says the child was sleeping beside her grandmother when an attacker cut through the mosquito net and carried her away around 4 am. The family, who were living on the streets after their home was demolished, described a terrifying scene as they woke up to find her gone.
The child, from the Banjara community, was reportedly found the next afternoon near the Tarakeshwar railway high drain, lying in a pool of blood. She was naked and immediately transported to Tarakeshwar Gramin Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition as doctors evaluate injuries and provide care.
Police have registered an FIR under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and launched a probe to identify and arrest the perpetrator. Authorities have not released details of any arrests at this time.
The incident drew sharp political reactions, with opposition parties accusing the state government of downplaying the crime and calling for greater accountability. Supporters of the ruling party emphasized the need for a speedy investigation and justice for the child.
The family’s distress is compounded by their precarious living situation since their homes were demolished, highlighting broader concerns about child safety and shelter access in the region. Community leaders have urged authorities to increase vigilance and support for vulnerable families to prevent such tragedies in the future.
