Russian Drone Hits Romanian High-Rise: NATO Members Wounded for First Time
A Russian drone has crashed into a residential block in Romania, causing a fire and wounding citizens. This marks a major escalation for the NATO member state.
A residential building in eastern Romania became the center of a major international incident on Friday when a Russian drone crashed into a block of flats, sparking a fire and causing injuries. The drone, which was part of an overnight attack aimed at Ukraine, struck the 10th floor of an apartment building in the town of Galati, located near the border.
The impact was devastating for the residents. Romanian authorities confirmed that the drone’s entire explosive payload detonated upon contact, leading to a fire that forced the evacuation of approximately 70 people. Emergency services worked quickly to put out the flames, while medical teams treated two individuals for abrasions. While Russian drones have crossed into Romanian airspace several times since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, this marks the first time that citizens of the NATO member state have been physically harmed on their own soil.
The incident has sparked an immediate and sharp response from world leaders. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned the "reckless behavior," stating it poses a danger to the entire alliance. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also weighed in, noting that Russia’s actions have "crossed yet another line." Within Romania, an emergency meeting of the Supreme Defence Council was called by President Nicușor Dan to address what officials are calling the most serious incident to affect the country since the war began.
Military officials revealed just how little time they had to react. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled as soon as the drones were detected, but Brigadier General Gheorghe Maxim explained that the army had only four minutes between detection and the moment of impact. He noted that Romanian forces face significant constraints because they cannot fire munitions that might violate Ukrainian airspace. For now, NATO has reiterated its commitment to defending "every inch" of allied territory as tensions continue to rise along the border.
