Sensex, Nifty Dip as US Tariff Fears Rise on India-US Trade Talks
Stocks slide as looming US tariff risk and stalled India-US trade deal spark investor jitters; Sensex slips 600+ points while Nifty nears 25,700.
Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing streak to a fifth straight session on Friday as investors weighed the odds of a stalled India–US trade deal and the specter of a fresh 500% tariff on buyers of Russian oil. At 1:02 pm, the BSE Sensex stood at 83,568.13, down 612.83 points or 0.73%, while the Nifty tracked lower at 25,689.25, down 181 points or 0.71%.
Analysts warned that a 500% tariff would alter risk pricing across equities, currencies, and commodities. 'This signals a dramatic shift in how trade policy is used as geopolitical leverage,' said Amit Jain, co-founder of Ashika Global Family Office Services. He noted India’s energy strategy hinges on affordable supply for 1.4 billion people and pointed to the drop in Russian crude imports from about 1.8 million barrels per day to around 1 million bpd as a sign policy and markets are already adjusting. 'If such extreme tariffs are enacted, we could see volatility in sectors tied to US trade, pressure on export competitiveness, and renewed caution from foreign investors. But fundamentals remain solid,' he added.
On the trade deal, one industry observer claimed the agreement isn't dead, but progress stalled because key talks didn't reach a personal call. In one remark, Howard Lutnick said the deal with India isn't done because Prime Minister Modi didn't call President Trump to conclude it. The comment underscored the sensitivity of the talks even as markets brace for potential policy shifts that could ripple through earnings.
Despite the volatility, analysts emphasise that India's underlying fundamentals remain intact and suggest investors focus on defensives paired with growth plays. While markets face a bumpy path in the near term, a balanced portfolio could help weather the policy noise and preserve exposure to a long-term growth story.
