Officials say pollution is driven by a combination of local factors and cross-border emissions from neighbouring states, with PM2.5 and PM10 remaining dangerously high. The air quality index has hovered in the severe category as calm winds this week stalled pollutant dispersal.
To curb pollution, the government has been pursuing dust mitigation, hotspot action, and strict daily monitoring for months. The GRAP-3 move tightens restrictions on construction, transport, and outdoor activities in the capital, aiming to reduce dust, curb emissions at construction sites, and improve street-level enforcement.
With schools shifting to hybrid classes for younger students, parents and teachers are preparing for a transition that balances safety and learning needs. Citizens are urged to limit outdoor exposure and wear masks in crowded areas while the city continues updating policies and monitoring air quality.
Analysts say enforcement will be the deciding factor in the policy’s effectiveness, particularly given cross-border pollution. The government says it will keep monitoring levels and adjust measures as needed to tame the capital’s choking air in the coming days.
