Tributes have poured in for two "brave" police officers who tragically died in a horrific crash on the A66 that also claimed the lives of five other individuals on Saturday morning. Pc Matthew Blades, 37, and Pc Tom Clough, 38, were killed when a Volkswagen Passat, travelling the wrong way down the dual carriageway near Middlesbrough, collided with their marked armed response vehicle. The police car was heading in the correct direction when the devastating incident occurred.
The collision happened at approximately 3:39 AM in South Bank. Cleveland Police confirmed that the families of the five people travelling in the Volkswagen are being supported, although their names have not yet been released to the public.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash. This inquiry follows a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police. The watchdog stated that officers from the force had spotted a suspicious vehicle, which led to a pursuit before the car entered the A66 and collided with the police vehicle.
Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police addressed reporters on Saturday afternoon, expressing profound sorrow. She stated, "These were brave officers protecting our communities and serving our residents who didn't return home to their families at the end of their shift." Her words highlighted the immense sacrifice made by Pc Blades and Pc Clough.
The tragedy has resonated deeply across the nation, with prominent figures offering their condolences. Prime Minister Andy Burnham conveyed his devastation upon hearing about the crash, and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also extended her thoughts to all those affected by the incident. Anna Turley, MP for the Redcar constituency where the accident took place, also paid tribute to the fallen officers, saying, "They went to work to keep people safe and they should have come home to their families. Their loss will be felt deeply by their loved ones and the entire community."
