Sir Keir Starmer, fresh from a general election victory, is reportedly weighing a potential resignation from his role as Prime Minister following a weekend of intense reflection at Chequers. Allies close to Starmer suggest he might announce a timetable for his departure as early as Monday, with several cabinet ministers urging him to outline a clear succession plan. Despite initial reports suggesting he would fight on, the political atmosphere remains charged with anticipation.

The unfolding drama coincides with Andy Burnham's return to Westminster, fresh off a resounding victory in the Makerfield by-election. Labour MPs are set to gather for a photo opportunity with the former Greater Manchester mayor, a clear signal of his growing prominence within the party. Burnham is reportedly keen to assume the premiership in September, after the summer recess, which would allow Starmer time to "secure his legacy." However, some Labour MPs are pushing for an earlier transfer of power, possibly by mid-July.

Two main scenarios are emerging if Sir Keir were to announce his resignation. The first is an "Andy Burnham coronation." This would be triggered by Starmer's resignation, requiring Burnham to secure the backing of 20 percent of Labour MPs (81 out of 403). If Starmer resigns and no other candidate secures the required support, Burnham could be crowned without a broader contest.

Alternatively, a full leadership contest could be launched even without Starmer's resignation, provided Burnham (or another candidate) secures the 81 MP endorsements. If multiple candidates meet this threshold, a competitive election would ensue.
