West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has taken decisive action following a tragic incident in South 24 Parganas district. On Saturday, July 11, 2026, the CM handed over an appointment letter for a civic volunteer position and a ₹25 lakh cheque to the family of Indrajit Mondal, a man who was lynched by an angry mob. Mondal was mistakenly targeted after the body of an 11-year-old girl, who had been raped and murdered, was recovered from a pond.
The Chief Minister's visit included a meeting with the bereaved parents of the young girl and subsequently with the family of Indrajit Mondal. Mr. Adhikari had previously asserted Mondal's innocence and vowed that those responsible for the lynching would face murder charges. So far, five individuals have been arrested in connection with Mondal's death.
Indrajit Mondal's elder brother, Bapi Mondal, confirmed the CM's commitment, stating, "The Chief Minister has assured us of all help. He gave me the appointment letter and asked me to join the job. This is an appointment letter for a civic volunteer at the Baruipur Police District." This gesture aims to provide some solace and support to the family grappling with their profound loss.
Earlier, CM Adhikari visited the victim's house, assuring her father of comprehensive assistance. He later inaugurated a new police outpost at Surjapur, falling under the Baruipur Police District's jurisdiction, indicating enhanced security measures in the area. The body of the minor, who had gone missing on July 4, was discovered on July 5 in the Surjapur Haat area. This horrific discovery ignited widespread protests, with locals blocking roads, burning tires, and damaging police vehicles, demanding immediate arrests.
Hours after the girl's body was found, Indrajit Mondal was brutally beaten to death by enraged locals who suspected his involvement. However, authorities later clarified his innocence. In connection with the actual rape-murder case, four individuals have been arrested. One of the accused, Prabash Mondal, was reportedly killed in a police encounter after allegedly attempting to snatch an officer's gun. Civil rights organizations have since called for a probe into the Baruipur encounter, adding another layer to the complex developments surrounding this tragedy.
