Shocking details have emerged from the preliminary hearing of singer David Anthony Burke, known as D4vd, who stands accused of murdering 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Prosecutors presented text messages and evidence suggesting a harrowing relationship between Burke, 19, and Celeste, which began when she was just 11 and he was 17. The court proceedings in Los Angeles aim to determine if there is sufficient evidence for Burke to face trial on charges of murder and sexual abuse, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Central to the prosecution's case are text exchanges recovered from Burke's iCloud data. These messages indicate that Celeste had become pregnant and subsequently underwent an abortion prior to her death. In June 2024, Celeste reportedly texted Burke, "What [if] the first abortion didn't work?" Earlier, in January 2024, Burke allegedly apologized to Celeste for "putting her through this," to which she responded, "neither of us are capable of watching and taking care of the baby. it's for the best no?" She also confirmed the baby was his. Further messages from Burke in June 2024 reportedly stated, "Let's let this abortion be the last one til we have the real one…"
Prosecutors allege that Burke began abusing Celeste when she was 13 years old. The court heard that Celeste had threatened to expose Burke's alleged abuse and destroy his career, which, according to the prosecution, prompted him to kill her. Beyond the text messages, Los Angeles Police Detective Corey Farell testified that Burke's phone also contained photos of the teenager during the alleged sexual abuse. The emotional toll on Celeste's family was evident in court, as her mother, Mercedes Rivas Hernandez, became visibly distressed and left the courtroom when details of some of the pictures were described. Discussions about the two moving in together were also reportedly found on Burke's device. This ongoing legal battle sheds a stark light on a tragic and deeply disturbing case.
