Parts of England are preparing to swelter this weekend as a fresh heatwave sweeps across the country, with temperatures expected to climb as high as 32C by the beginning of next week. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat, impacting vast areas including the East of England, London, South East England, South West England, and Wales, specifically for Monday and Tuesday.
In response to the escalating temperatures, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has activated amber heat health alerts across the South East, East of England, London, and the South West. These crucial alerts, which came into force on Thursday, will remain active until 8 pm on Tuesday. Additionally, yellow alerts have been issued for the East and West Midlands, signaling an increased risk to vulnerable individuals and potential higher demand for health and care services.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of taking sensible precautions. “Sustained periods of warm weather can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun,” he stated. Dr. Sousa urged health and social care services in affected regions to be prepared and reminded the public to look out for elderly relatives, neighbors, and those with underlying health conditions, ensuring they are aware of the forecast and following necessary advice.
Forecasters anticipate temperatures in the southeast of England to approach 30C on Friday, while other parts of the country will see temperatures in the mid-twenties. Scotland and Wales, however, are expected to experience cooler weather, with temperatures unlikely to exceed 20C. Heatwave criteria are likely to be met in some areas by Saturday and more broadly by Sunday. A UK heatwave is officially declared when a location records at least three consecutive days where daily maximum temperatures meet or exceed the specific heatwave threshold, which varies by county. For instance, in London and the South East, this threshold stands at 28C or 27C.
