In a significant move to ensure a "qualitative and impartial" investigation, the Supreme Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to include an independent forensic auditor as the fifth member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). This SIT is tasked with probing alleged embezzlement and financial irregularities concerning donations made to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.
During a recent hearing on a batch of petitions, a three-judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and including Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, emphasized the need for a thorough and transparent inquiry. The addition of a forensic auditor, proposed by the Supreme Court and agreed upon by Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta representing the State, is expected to bring specialized expertise to the investigation of misappropriated trust funds.
The court has given the reconstituted SIT, which is currently led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kiran S. and comprises three IPS officers, two weeks to submit its first status report. This directive underscores the judiciary's intent to closely monitor the investigation's progress without the supervision of a retired judge, ensuring direct oversight and accountability. The Supreme Court had previously cautioned against politicizing the investigation, urging a focus on uncovering the truth.
This development comes amidst allegations of financial irregularities that have raised concerns among devotees and the public alike regarding the management of funds intended for the construction of the iconic Ram Temple. The inclusion of a forensic expert is seen as a crucial step towards upholding public trust and ensuring that all contributions are accounted for properly and transparently.
