OPS Joins DMK Ahead of TN Polls, Signaling Political Realignment

In a dramatic turn ahead of Tamil Nadu’s polls, O. Panneerselvam, a former chief minister and a longtime AIADMK associate, joined the DMK. The move came amid broader realignments shaping the electoral landscape, with OPS criticizing rival E. Palaniswami as autocratic while signaling a broader consolidation against the AIADMK. In a separate but related show of strength, former AIADMK MLA Om Sakthi Segar joined the DMK in Chennai, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. K. Stalin present for the switch. Segar, a former ex-serviceman who once led the Puducherry unit of a rights-focused AIADMK faction after the party split, emphatically moved to the DMK as part of a broader reshaping of the opposition space ahead of polling day.

The churn doesn’t end there. Another former minister, Vellamandi Natarajan, reportedly rejoined AIADMK after previously aligning with the party’s internal splits and with O. Panneerselvam. His return highlights how relationships and loyalties are shifting even among senior cadres as candidates prepare for the race.

As the realignments unfold, the DMK signaled its intent to press forward with alliance talks, noting seat-sharing discussions with CPI(M), CPI, and KMDK. The ongoing negotiations reflect a strategic attempt to assemble a broader, more cohesive opposition front or, at minimum, a stronger DMK-led coalition capable of contesting multiple constituencies.

Chennai’s political climate is already buzzing with speculation about how these moves will translate at the ballot box.
