Tragic Fire at Kenya Girls' Boarding School Leaves 16 Dead and Dozens Injured

A devastating fire broke out at the Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Kenya, during the early hours of Thursday morning, claiming the lives of at least 16 students. The blaze erupted while most students were asleep in their dormitory, leading to a frantic search-and-rescue operation as the community waited in shock for news of their loved ones.

The fire reportedly started around 1:00 AM on the first floor of one of the school’s dormitories. Despite efforts by response teams to extinguish the flames, the floor was completely destroyed. By 3:00 AM, the fire was brought under control, but the damage was already catastrophic. Authorities confirmed that dozens of other students were injured during the incident, with many being rushed to nearby hospitals.

According to Education Minister Julius Ogamba, who visited the scene, 71 students have already been treated and discharged, while seven others remain admitted for further medical care. The school has begun the process of releasing students to their parents and guardians as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen expressed his condolences to the grieving families, urging the public to remain patient and avoid speculation during this "anxious moment." Police and the Kenya Red Cross remain on the ground to provide support and continue the investigation into what triggered the blaze.

Tragedies of this nature are unfortunately not uncommon in Kenyan boarding schools, which have seen a series of deadly fires in recent years.
